Kani Pashmina Shawl — Kashmir's Most Demanding Handwoven Art

A Kani Pashmina shawl is not embroidered — it is woven, thread by thread, using small wooden bobbins called kanis instead of a shuttle. Each colored thread is guided by hand into the base fabric, allowing artisans to build intricate, multi-colored patterns directly into the weave itself rather than adding them afterward. This is what separates true Kani work from every other Kashmiri shawl technique.

The process is extraordinarily slow by design. A single Kani Pashmina shawl with a dense pattern can take a skilled artisan several weeks to months to complete, working from a coded pattern guide called a talim that has been passed down through generations of weaving families in the Kashmir valley.

Because of this, no two Kani shawls are ever perfectly identical, and the technique has been used for centuries to create some of the most valuable and historically significant textiles in South Asia — pieces once reserved for royal courts and now treasured as heirlooms.
